Find the answers you need to common questions about treatment with Optune Lua.
Remember, your healthcare provider is always your best source of information regarding your treatment.
Optune Lua is a portable, battery-operated medical device. It produces electric fields called Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields). Treatment with TTFields has been shown to kill metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC) cells.
You should use Optune Lua for at least 12 hours per day on average for the best response. Try to use Optune Lua as many hours per day as possible, since the more time you use it, the more effective treatment can be. You can take short breaks, if needed.
Optune Lua is used together with a class of immunotherapy known as PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors or a type of chemotherapy called docetaxel. The treatment is indicated for adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer who have progressed on or after a platinum-based regimen. The device is intended to be used for at least 12 hours each day.
In the study, the only common side effect caused by Optune Lua was skin irritation. Any other side effects were due to the cancer itself or the cancer drugs* used with the device. Optune Lua directly targets cancer cells and doesn’t increase chemotherapy- or immunotherapy-related side effects.

Skin irritation is the most common side effect of treatment with Optune Lua. Being proactive and taking steps to minimize skin irritation could help you avoid severe symptoms or infection. Call your doctor if you have swelling, redness, or excessive itching. The doctor may prescribe a topical treatment to treat skin irritation.
If you have hair on your upper body, remove it before placing the arrays. You can use an electric shaver for a short trim. It does not need to be a close shave. Remember to clean your electric shaver after every use.
When placing new arrays, shift them about 2 cm (3/4 inch) from the previous placement. To help the arrays maintain contact with your skin, change them twice a week (or once every 4 days at most).
When removing arrays, gently and carefully peel back the edge of the array to remove it from your skin. You may use baby oil, warm water, medical adhesive remover, or water-based makeup remover to help loosen the edges of the arrays as you peel them off.
While keeping the arrays in place, unplug the array connections from the Optune Lua device. Put a towel around your upper body to cover the arrays and wires still attached to you to prevent them from getting wet. Be sure to leave the Optune Lua device completely outside the bathroom while bathing.
Unplug the arrays and leave the Optune Lua device completely outside the bathroom while bathing. Warm water from the shower can help loosen the adhesive and make the arrays easier to remove. Remember—make sure the arrays are unplugged before showering, then take a regular shower with your arrays completely removed.
Remember, don't use your device near water or outside in the rain. If your device gets wet, press the TTFields button to stop therapy and turn the power off. Call technical support at 1-855-281-9301 (toll-free) for further instructions.
Optune Lua has an internal fan that helps keep it from overheating. The carrying bag that comes with the device has been designed to allow for proper airflow. We recommend that you use one of the bags provided by Novocure. To see the different ways to carry the bag, click here.
